Botox injections are the most popular, non-invasive cosmetic treatment in the United States. Both women and men across California in Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, and Culver City have Botox treatments to treat unwanted facial wrinkles caused by muscle movements.
What is Botox?
Botox is a neurotoxin derived from Clostridium botulinum, an organism found in the natural environment. It is used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles by paralyzing the underlying muscles. Botox blocks the chemical signals from the nerves that cause muscles to contract, smoothing out the skin.
Why is Botox Performed?
Botox is not only used to treat medical conditions, but is most popularly known for its use for cosmetic treatments. Botox temporarily paralyzes the muscles responsible for fine lines and wrinkles. The constant contractions of muscles caused by facial expressions eventually begin to create dynamic lines and wrinkles. People usually seek out Botox when they are looking to reduce or eliminate:
- Forehead lines
- Crow’s feet around the outer eyes
- “11” lines between the eyebrows
- Visible neck bandsLip lines
- Chin dimpling
How is Botox Performed?
Botox is performed by a highly skilled, board certified doctor or experience nurse injector. A very fine needle injected into the muscle to directly deliver the Botox. Total treatment time will vary depending on the number of areas being injected, but an average session is only 10-15 minutes.
Be sure to inform your injector if you have had tolerance issues with Botox treatments.
Before a Botox Treatment
Most people are able to tolerate the discomfort caused by the tiny needles. If you are sensitive to pain, an ice pack can be applied to the area prior to injection to reduce discomfort, but this is rarely needed.
During a Botox Treatment
During your treatment, your doctor or nurse will inject tiny amounts of the Botox substance into the skin and/or muscles being treated. The number of injections will depend on the extent of the area.
After a Botox Treatment
Make sure you do not rub or massage the treated area as it might cause the substance to migrate elsewhere.
An ice pack may be used after your treatment to reduce redness and temporary swelling to the injection sites. Once your treatment is completed, you can resume your normal daily activities.
Some individuals may experience mild bruising in the treated area, especially those who tend to bruise easily.
To avoid the chance of bruising, it is advised to avoid Aspirin, Ibuprofen, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications two weeks before your treatments. Alcohol should also be avoided starting one week prior to your Botox treatment.
While most patients do not experience bruising form tiny injections, if you do, it is recommended to follow these guidelines. If you do experience bruising, you can apply Arnica ointment to speed up the healing time.
When Will I See Results?
On average, it takes 7-10 days to see the results. After about 3 days post-treatment, you will start to see improvement in the appearance of any fine lines or wrinkles.
By selectively targeting and weakening the muscles, lines and wrinkles can generally be eliminated for 3-4 months without interfering with normal facial function.
To maintain your results, it is important to keep up with regularly scheduled appointments. Some people will come back in for touch ups once they start to see lines forming again.
Side Effects of Botox
A very small percentage of patients may develop a droopy upper eyelid when treated in the forehead/brow area. While this resolves within a matter of weeks, this happens when the Botox migrates down towards the eye. To prevent this side effect, it is important to not only see a highly experienced doctor or nurse, but to not rub the area of treatment for at least 12 hours after treatment. It also helps to not lay flat for up to 5 hours after treatment.
