Why do I need a routine physical exam?

Regular physical exams often provide the first indication of underlying diseases which can be serious. They also help your doctor identify risk factors like high blood pressure or elevated levels of blood sugar that could indicate you’re at risk for cardiovascular disease or type 2 diabetes. By comparing health data from year to year, your doctor can identify changes that could signify a need for more intensive testing or treatment, and lab work provides critical in-depth information for a complete picture of your health. What’s more, a regular physical provides you with an opportunity to discuss health concerns with your doctor so you can get the answers you need to feel confident about your health.

What does a physical exam include?

First, the doctor will talk to you about your health history, making sure it’s complete and up-to-date, and ask you about your general health and any symptoms or illnesses you may have had since your last physical. Your blood pressure will be measured and the doctor will listen to your heart and your lungs. The doctor will also look in your ears and down your throat and palpate (gently press) your belly to check your liver size and make sure you don’t have any areas of tenderness. In most cases, blood work will be ordered to provide a more thorough picture of your overall health, and you may also be asked to provide a urine sample. Finally, the doctor will discuss your health with you and make recommendations based on findings.

How frequently should I schedule a physical?

Having a physical every year is the best way to make sure you’re as healthy as you can be and to keep an eye out for signs and symptoms that could indicate a more serious underlying medical condition. Annual exams are also critical for monitoring your blood pressure and for providing guidance that can help you lead a healthier lifestyle.

We also offer specific appointments for sports physicals in Los Angeles.
